Project Details
NDML has been extensively working for the cause of Thalassemia by providing comprehensive care to patients who belong to marginalized communities. NDML's interventions include the provision of bed-side Leukocyte Filters and yearly DXA Scan and Cardiac & Liver T2* MRI investigations to underprivileged Thalassemia patients. In order to improve the quality of life of Thalassemia major patients and ensure appropriate disease management, there is a dire need for regular interventions such as filters, oral supplements, iron chelation therapy, periodic investigations, etc. NDML has been supporting Thalassemia major patients by ensuring that some of these crucial interventions are available to patients in a timely manner. The use of bed-side Leukocyte Filters helps in reducing febrile reactions and thereby decreases allergic reactions during blood transfusions, while DXA Scan and Cardiac & Liver T2* MRI tests help to diagnose life-threatening risks of iron overload on critical organs, which may cause damage to body parts like the heart, liver, pituitary and pancreas during blood transfusions. In the current FY, NDML aims to benefit around 175+ Thalassemia patients who belong to poor socio-economic backgrounds from Mumbai and suburban areas and adjacent districts like Thane, Palghar, Raigad, etc.
